Editor Help Draft

General

Using the editor is basicly like posting at the UHE forum. Of course the Wiki's synthax and functions differs a bit. While "playing" with the editor use the preview button and save pages only if you're satisfied with the edits. Your user page is the perfect playground to get familiar with the editor's features.

How to add or create a new page

To do...

Organizing a page

A page can be divided into sections, using the section header syntax.

Creation of sections

Sections are created by using headlines.

Section
Level two headline

Subsection
Level three headline

Sub-subsection
Level four headline

Up to seven headline levels can be used.

Table of contents (TOC)

For each page with more than three headings, a table of contents (TOC) is automatically generated from the section headings, unless:

 • (for a user) preferences are set to turn it off
 • (for an article) in the edit box __NOTOC__ is added

With __TOC__ in the wikitext a TOC is added even if the page has fewer than four headings. It is put at the position of this code. This allows any positioning, also e.g. on the right, and in a table cell, and it also allows multiple occurrence, e.g. in every section (this seems only useful if the sections are long, so that the TOCs take up only a small part of the total space).

Thus there may be some introductory text before the TOC, known as the "lead". Although usually a header after the TOC is preferable, __TOC__ can be used to avoid being forced to insert a meaningless header just to position the TOC correctly, i.e., not too low.

Linking to a section

A link to a section within the same page looks like this: link_label

Linking to a section

The line above looks like this on the page:

Linking to a section

The link will jump to the header of the section
you're reading right now.

A link to a section in another than the current page looks like this: link_label.

Weight saving 470/501 Models

The line above looks like this on the page:

Weight saving, Husaberg 470/501 Models

The link will jump to the header of the 470/501 section
on the Weight saving page.

Referencing

This is a summary of the most common codes for referencing. For more detailed information see the Media Wiki Link Help.

The following types of hyperlink can be distinguished:

Internal links

If no link label is specified they are of the form target. The link title is the name of the (eventual) target page. For MediaWiki pages the blank space can be replaced by an underscore. There is an existence detection feature: it will be a link to the viewing page if the page exists at the time of loading or previewing of the referring page, otherwise to the edit page ("red link").

By using a piped link the target and label can chosen independently: label.

See also Linking to a section.

Example to to...

External links

Links to external websites or URLs look like this [target]. No blank space is allowed in the URL. The URL has to include "http://" (ftp:// also works). A label can be specified with a blank space in between [target label].

Using images for external links

When using tumbnails for external links an image plays the role of the label.
